Appleby Castle

Experience Living History at Appleby Castle which cherishes one of the few remaining intact Norman Keeps in the UK. Converted to stone around 1100 the Keep houses the Norman Centre; a unique and interactive experience explaining the Norman occupation intertwined with the history of the castle. Set over three floors, guest can climb the staircase to the roof with amazing 360 degree views.
Embark on a guided tour learning about the history of the castle and its illustrious owners.
The Norman Centre and the guided tour take approximately 1hour respectively.
Guests are advised to explore the park land and beautiful scenery of the castle. The 13th century round tower, 12th century portcullis, yew tree terrace and red squirrels are highlights. There are plenty of picnic benches and benches to sit and relax. There is a adventure playground and animals to see and interact with about the grounds.
Buses and Coaches Welcome.
Lunch or evening meals are available by prior arrangement.
Sample some teas, coffees, cake, refreshment, or lunch in the Malice Scourge Tea Shop located in the ancient 12thcentury great hall.
Appleby Castle provides accommodation (with special rates for groups) and fine dining.
Parking is available. Set at the foot of the Pennines Appleby is 12 miles along the A66 from the M6 (J38 & 40), or 28 miles from the A1 at Scotch corner. Appleby train station is 900 yards from the castle on the Settle to Carlisle line.
The castle overlooks the ancient county town of Westmorland with quaint shops, quirky cafes, a Norman church, Lady Anne’s Alms Houses, friendly pubs and a connection to president George Washington.
